healthy snacks

vegetable juices

it has been so nice getting into a gym routine again.  January is the beginning of a New Year and it always a good time to try to get into a new routine.  since matt and I have been eating separately more often, it has been easier for me to snack throughout the day on lower-calorie foods than the big, hefty meals I used to make for dinner which is helping with me with my weight loss goals.  just trying to get to a healthy weight for my height and also tone up a little this year.  I have never been in "good shape" so why not do it at the age of 30?  maybe I will even take a yoga class or something when I get a little more active.  here's a list of my favorite snacks to keep around the house.   *mmmmm*

50 shades of gray

matt and I went shopping today to get a new duvet from West Elm in a color I've never bought before: gray!  now that i'm older, I have an appreciation for neutrals.  Layered here with my A.P.C. quilt.  picking up a sheet set printed with little chevrons (also west elm) later this week to add some darker print to the mix and will probably get some new printed pillows and a natural, fluffy rug.

New Year's Resolutions

print by emilymcdowelldraws, $32

I can't believe how quickly this year has gone by!  I am so happy with this past year and all the great things that have happened, but there is still a lot to work on for the upcoming year.  I know it is cheesy to make too many goals considering most people don't follow through.  I still remember when I turned 24 and was going through a semi-midlife crisis and sat down one day and made a laundry list of very specific goals....and then followed through with them!  I accomplished a lot this year that I was proud of including: getting married, building my Etsy business, finding a job that I actually enjoy.

  • this year I would like to work on my health.  I've already purchased a scale, which I've never owned before.  It's a good way to hold yourself accountable and track your progress.  If Matt and I decide to have a baby it would be in the next few years, so I definitely need to get into shape PRE- baby so it is easier to maintain.  I've always been a yo-yo dieter with my weight fluctuating a great deal up and down from year to year.  I will be able to accomplish my goal this year by making the gym a part of my weekly routine and not depending on others to go with me like I usually do--it's not like I can talk and hang out anyway!  Focusing on cooking more meals at home, which I tend to cook healthier anyway.
  • making more of a schedule.  This is a joint goal for Matt and I.  We tend to let the time slip away from us doing mundane and uneventful things.  We both spend too much pointless time on the internet.  I love hosting parties and participating in craft events so I will make sure to add these things into my schedule more often.  Making sure that we make time for each other like a date night and doing things outside of our box (seeing a play perhaps?)  Also scheduling meals and gym time will be good for my busy schedule in making sure that I stay on track!
  • Continue growing Kitsch and Fancy.  I have been a bit burnt out as of late, but it seems a shame to let all my hard work go to waste.  I need to find a way to balance my Etsy work-life with my work-work-life.  Scheduling!  If I do not get hired on to the company this year, I may pull back to part-time to re-focus my energy on growing my business.
  • Focus on the BIG.  Matt and I tend to be "in the moment" type people, even though he thinks we're not super spontaneous.  We focus a lot on having fun now and putting important future-things on the back burner.  This year, we are both trying to balance having more fun in our lives while accomplishing our major goals.  We would like to buy a house, move forward with our careers, work on getting health insurance...boring things like that.
  • Quality over Quantity.  After working in retail for years, I am drowning in "stuff".  A lot of it gives my place and wardrobe character, but a lot of it is also useless filler.  We have started embracing this idea by having trips on our birthdays or nice dinners instead of more stuff!  Now that I am older I want less and less.  I am going to try to make sure anything new I bring into my life (consumable and not) is something I need and will add improvement to my life.  No more mindless shopping, I want to save and splurge for important pieces to add to my home and wardrobe.  This king-sized bed was a good start for us!
  • Spending more time with friends and family.  Matt and I tend to be home-bodies which is good to a certain extent but can also verge on unhealthy.  We have both been trying to hang out with friends more and it has been good for our relationship and social life!
Here's to another great year in 2013!!!
